Afytos village Chalkidikis

Afytos or Athitos is a large settlement of the Municipality of Kassandra. Athitos or Afytos is Halkidiki’s stone-built “balcony”, offering breathtaking views to Toroneos Bay and a colourful combination of sea, sky and nature. The village is pronounced in both ways. The first name ‘‘ afytos ” is that the village had no intense vegetation and the second name over the years was adopted. A traditional settlement that keeps its picturesque landscape made up of stone houses and cobbled streets. It has 1,231 inhabitants based on the population census of 2001.The village square hosts the church of St. Demetrius which was built around 1858 and is the only domed basilica in Halkidiki. The mansions of Katsanis (1860), the artist Paralis, and Athanasiades (1898) including the community building, former mansion of Aletras, deserve a closer, more detailed look.
