Mount Skaros

Mount Skaros that rises above Nikiana is the Homeric «Niion» according to the great German archaeologist Dörpfeld. The forest at the top of the mountain consists of a unique species of oak (rupaki), that reproduces naturally for hundreds of years now and from the beginning became a subject of research for many foreign researchers such as Sprenger from Germany who has recorded the rare fauna of the forest since 1915. The view from the mountain to the surrounding areas is unique and the walk among the ancient trees will reward you.
Ιn the mountain of Skaroi, there are three of the most remarkable religious monuments on the island of Lefkada:
The historic Monastery of the Red Church: was founded in 1478, in the village of Platistoma. It is named after the local red mortar that was used to construct it. The monastery that was built later in the 16th century, promoted as a religious center with unique fame and wealth.
Hermitage of the Holy Fathers: Rooted for centuries in a rocky area, 5km over Nikiana on the way to Alexandros, in a cave near Skaros. It is one of the oldest Orthodox monuments of the island.
Monastery of St. George: It is located in the forest of Skaros, just after Kolivata in Alexandros area, on a plateau overlooking the northwest of the island.
Another walking route is the approximately 3km ascent from the foot of the mountain of Skaros which ends at the oakforest of Skaros.
