Plastira Lake is a lake located on the plateau of Nevropoli in the Prefecture of Karditsa. It is 25 km away west of Karditsa, at an altitude of 800m and is 325km away from Athens and 250 km from Thessaloniki. It is an artificial lake and its official name is Lake Tauropou. It was formed in 1959 with the completion of the dam at the south end of the River Tavropos or Megdowa, and the idea of its construction was attributed to the military and political Nicholas Plastiras when in 1935 he visited his hometown and had catastrophic floods in the region and Macedonia from constant rainfall, seeing the site is said to say that “here one day will become a lake”, from which its most famous name. Its funding was made from money that Italy owed to Greece (war reparations) and the construction was undertaken by a French company. It contains 400 million cubic meters of water, it has a maximum length of 12 km, a maximum width of 4 km, its total surface is 24 km2, its maximum depth is about 60 m and its maximum altitude is 750 m. Its water is used for irrigation and power generation. In recent years, the lake has been harnessed and touristically, with several activities on and around the lake, such as horseback riding, archery and ride on the lake with canoes or water bikes. In the summer you will find beach, umbrellas, sun loungers, water bikes, boats, etc. At the edge of the beach, the Plastira Lake Festival, which includes music events, concerts, etc.
