The castle of Mytilene

The castle of Mytilene is the largest historical monument of Lesvos and one of the largest in the Mediterranean Sea with a total area of 200 acres. The fortress was built in the 6th century by Justinian I and is believed to have been built on an ancient Acropolis. During the 14th and 16th centuries the Guatemalan reconstructed the castle. When the island become part of Greece in 1912, they took advantage of the castle’s resources, in order to build refugee homes.

The present form of the castle highlights the fortification rates of all these periods. In recent years, cultural events have been held in the castle of Mytilene during summer.
