Paxos is an island of the Ionian Islands. It is located very close to Corfu and the population of the island is 2.300 inhabitants.The capital of the island is the picturesque village of Gaios. On the north side is Lakka and on the eastern beach is the picturesque Loggos. The island complex of Paxos has been designated as a Special Protection Area, part of the Natura 2000. There are some of the most beautiful beaches of the Ionian Sea in Paxos. Like Plakes, Vrika and Orkos are all enchanting and have crystal clear waters. According to mythology, the Paxos were created when the god Neptune struck Corfu with its trident, cutting off its southern edge and forming the Paxos.
The lighthouse operated with oil until 1913. In 1916 a square tower of 10.7m height was built, in a another safer location with a focal height of 64 meters.
The first lighthouse of Cape Lakka was originally lit in 1825. It operated with olive oil and with a mirror machine with fixed parabolic mirrors. Its function was improved in 1887 and 1890, replacing the old mechanism.
