Welcome to beautiful Chania, a heavenly and pure land brimming with natural beauty, history, memory and culture. It is a land whose visitors will experience nature in all its glory and will encounter breathtaking sights. The western part of Crete is bounded to the north by the Cretan Sea, and to the west and south by the Mediterranean Sea. The regional unit also includes the southernmost island of Europe, Gavdos. Endless stretches of seashore bordered in frothy lace, inlets and islands of exotic beauty and sandy beaches tucked away at the foot of forbidding mountains. Impenetrable but yet such majestic gorges, holy caves, blessed rivers and lush, green plains thickly covered with olive and citrus trees. Ιt is a self-sufficient land in every way that is rich in endemic and rare flora and fauna. There are 5 provinces and 25 administrative regions (municipalities) in the prefecture of Chania (also written as Hania or Xania). The provinces are Kydonia, Kissamos and Apokoronas in the North and Selino and Sfakia in the South. The natural park of Samariá Gorge, a major tourist attraction and a refuge for the rare Cretan wild goat or kri-kri, is in the South of the regional unit.
