Xanthi is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace. The capital is Xanthi. Together with the regional units Rhodope and Evros, it forms the geographical region of Western Thrace. It is one of the 5 or 6 most important Greek prefectures as regards its forests, since its mountains are covered by 62 ha of forest. Its marine area, mainly around Vistonikos gulf, is excellent for fishing. It is also a rich source of minerals (marble, granite, graphite, geothermal field). Xanthi has a continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers.

The famous flea market, offers a unique opportunity to buy straight from the producers. Located in the center of the city, at the Trade Square (Plateia Emporiou), it takes place every Saturday morning (from 8am to 3pm).
