Assumption of Virgin Mary, Syros

The Assumption of Virgin Mary is the second oldest church on the island and was built behind the port in 1828. It is a three-aisled royal church with impressive architecture and decor. The interior adorns elements of wood and marble, while the vaults create a wooden skeleton that looks like an overturned ship. In the Temple is also the icon of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, the work of Dominique Theotokopoulos (El Greco). The icon is a work of 1562-64, among the early works of Theotokopoulos at the age of 19-22. Byzantine style, Cretan School. His signature is at the base of the middle candle, “DOMINIKOS THEOTOKOPOULOS O DEIKSIAS”. It has been there since 1850.
