The famous lagoon of Balos is located approximately 56km northwest of Chania and 17km northwest of Kissamos. The beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Balos is definitely the most photographed beach of Crete, a very favorite theme of all tourist guides in Greece. In the summer, the beach is flooded daily by thousands of visitors, who mostly arrive by boat from Kissamos. Balos is famous for its turquoise waters, the wild natural beauty and the beautiful exotic scenery. Everywhere there are small shells that make the sand, looks pink. The rocks give a special touch to the landscape. The entire area is included in the Natura protection program. In the wider area, the sheltered Mediterranean seal and the caretta caretta turtle find shelter. Access to Balos is made in two ways, the first and easiest one is to get a boat from Kissamos. The boat besides Balos will also leave you for a swim in the beach of the island of Imeris Gramvousa. The second way to visit Balos is by car. The route is not very easy and you have to go through a dirt road that starts from Kalyviani, along Cape Gramvousa. The road leads to a large parking lot and from there begins a path to the beach. The path is 1 kilometer and it is especially tedious to return. The panoramic view of Balos and the island of Imeros Gramvousas on the horizon is breathtaking and rewards the visitor.
