The Monastery of Faneromeni Lefkada

The Monastery of Faneromeni is a historic monastery located in Lefkada. It is 3 kilometers from the city of Lefkada. It is the largest and oldest monastery of the island and for centuries it is a religious center for the island. The monastery is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.  It is also the protector and patron saint of the island.

It is a monastery only with men with an Abbot and four monks. It celebrates with all grandeur on Monday of the Holy Spirit, with crowds of pilgrims flocking from all the surrounding areas. Apostolos Paul sent in 63 AD on the island three assistants, Acila, Sosiona and Herodion. The three of them they rules the teaching of Jesus to the Lefkadians in that area . This place became the first church on the island. In the 5th century AD  icon of Virgin Mary is ordered in Constantinople. The image will be presented in a miraculous way in front of the hagiographer. It is painted “planted” on the wood and it complements the colors, so it will be called Phaneromeni.
