On Karpathos island in the mountain of Ai-Elias (formerly called Olympos) there is the settlement Olympos. The inhabitants of Olympus stayed in a seaside settlement but escaped to this mountainous area due to raids by the pirates.
It has been characterized as a traditional settlement due to the special features it preserves until today. The settlement retains medieval architecture. In this village dominates “matriarchy”. Women from earlier years undertook the work as men migrated. Many women still wear traditional costume.
Access to the village takes place either by road from Pigadia (capital of the island), either by boat from Pigadia to Diafani port.
