The Church of Panaghia

Above Chora, at the top of the hill stands the imposing largest church of the island, the Church of Panagia, dedicated to the Koimisi Theotokou.You hesitate, imagining you’ll arrive out of breath, but the walk is surprisingly gentle and short. It is built on the site of an ancient sanctuary (there are still sculptures, inscriptions, statues), with materials from which it has been used for its reconstruction. At Panagia you can find one by following the uphill paved path that starts from Pounta square of Chora. The church is known for its tall bell tower, its architecture (Multimulus basilica), its marble temple, as well as the legend for the icon of Panagia and its miraculous qualities.
