Leros is situated on the northern part of the Dodecanese islands, in South-East Aegean. It covers an area of 53 square kilometres, is surrounded by many small islands and combines, hills, plains and indented coasts. Leros is a municipality with a population of inhabitants, with seat in Platanos and many settlements. Leros is known as the island of goddess Artemis (Diana). Leros owes its name to the ancient Greek word “Leros”, meaning smooth, flat. The “pride of the Greek fleet” lies sunken at Lakki port on the island of Leros.
Its bombardment by Nazi German fighter planes on September 26, 1943 took the lives of the ship’s captain and 72 crew members on board.
