Leros is situated on the northern part of the Dodecanese islands, in South-East Aegean. It covers an area of 53 square kilometres, is surrounded by many small islands and combines, hills, plains and indented coasts. Leros is a municipality with a population of inhabitants, with seat in Platanos and many settlements. Leros is known as the island of goddess Artemis (Diana). Leros owes its name to the ancient Greek word “Leros”, meaning smooth, flat.
