Kythnos is an island of the Western Cyclades, located between Serifos and Kea. The capital of the island is Chora with its port of Mericha. Its inhabitants call it Thermia and have been known since the 12th century. This name is due to the hot springs that exist in the bay of Agia Eirini and Loutra and attract many people today.
Most visitors, however, come to the island for its beautiful sandy beaches, such as the apokroysi, the episkopi and Kolonna. There are two villages on the island, Chora (or Mesaria) and Dryopida, as well as three main seaside settlements, Merichas port, Loutra with thermal springs and Panagia Kanala with the church of the same name. Apart from these there are several smaller settlements such as Agios Dimitrios, Episkopi, Kalo Livadi etc.
