The prefecture of Messinia is located southwest of the peninsula of the Peloponnese. To the east lies the Taygetos mountain range, which separates Messinia from Laconia. In the center of the prefecture lies the plain of Messinia - one of the most fertile in the peninsula and all over Greece. The largest river in the area, Pamisos river, flows through the plain of Kalamata. The capital of the prefecture is Kalamata. The city of Kalamata is 255 km away from Athens and is the second largest city on the peninsula. Kalamata is ideal for those who want to combine holidays on the beach with sightseeing, shopping and entertainment.
This is the place where many soldiers and inhabitants of Methoni were slaughtered, when the Turks occupied the fort in 1500.
